I often show students the Dr. Suess film THE SNEETCHES or read them
the book on the first day of a discussion of race. This story
highlights that race is a social construct. It shows a society which
has taken one biological difference - stars on their bellies or not -
and given it social meaning by creating a hierarchy involving access to
marshmallow roasts!. Sometimes students find talking about belly
stars is an easier way to approach the topic on the first day.
