List colleagues:
My daughter graduated from college two years ago with a
major in sociology. She has spent
most of the past two years traveling--Central America,
Australia and New Zealand, and Asia (currently in India). In the process of these travels she has
become passionate about a number of globalization issues. She will be coming back to the states by
December, and hopes to enter a graduate program in sociology. I had talked to her earlier about a possible
comparative sociology emphasis, but she now says she wants to focus on
"refugee sociology." I
must admit I do not know much about the field. I am assuming this is a subfield of "Immigration
and Transnationalism," but I thought someone on the list might know more
than I. She is not much interested
in demography, per se, but wants to do qualitative sociological work with
refugees.
Any advice for a 24 year old going
into such a field?
Any thoughts about the most
outstanding graduate programs in this area?
(She will likely be located in Chicago the first year back, but she will be more
mobile after that.)

I believe there was some discussion of differential
treatment of
"looters" in the press,
but I do not recall whether anyone shared there
photos from the
AP. They have now been taken down
from AP, but are
still available
on the web:
