My high school classes reached 40 this year and I don't even have that many desks.  Though I've never taught college, but I spent many, many, many years there as a student and it seems like I got more from classes that were 25-30.  Now as a teacher I also think 25-30 is the perfect size to teach to.
I don't have citations, but I know many states at the HS level limit class size to 30 or less.  Utah, unfortunately, isn't one of them

The Dean, prodded by the Provost, President, and Board, has asked departments to justify class sizes, especially those under 40 students or so.  Is anyone aware of literature on ideal class size for learning?  Specifically we were asked to address the question with regard to sociology, but I’m hopeful there’s general literature on class size issues.  Please send citations to me directly or to the list.
