Hello everyone,
The Institute for Coastal Research at Malaspina University-College in
Nanaimo, BC is looking for a canadidate for a Tier II Canada Research
Chair. I think that ideally, they are looking for an inter-disciplinary
social scientist, with interests in ecology and coastal issues. I've put
the information in this posting, as well as the direct link to the
website.
It would be great if you could forward this to anyone you think might be
an up and coming researcher. I believe the position brings five years of
funding, renewable for another five. It's a great opportunity for someone
with an active research agenda who wants to be at a vibrant and growing
institution!

Malaspina University-College
Malaspina University-College invites applications from emerging
researchers who wish to be considered for nomination for a Tier II Canada
Research Chair.
Malaspina is primarily an undergraduate teaching institution
developing research capacity to serve both our students and our community
(see the Institutional Research Strategy
http://research.mala.bc.ca/docs/Strategic_2003/MUC_Strategic_Research_Plan_2003Dec15_Glossy.pdf
). Successful CRC candidates are expected to take an active role in the
education of undergraduate students, hosted graduate students, and in the
future our own graduate students. Teaching proficiency is therefore very
important, as is involvement in the life of the institution. Candidates
will have significant research experience and publications and be at that
point in their careers where they are ready to take on significant new
research responsibilities and develop full research programs. At
Malaspina, CRC holders teach two upper level undergraduate courses per
year, one of these usually consisting of supervising undergraduate
research projects. The CRC candidate will reside in one or more academic
departments and be expected to participate in departmental activities.
The CRC in the Institute for Coastal Research
The recently formed Institute for Coastal Research (ICR), located in
Malaspinas new Library is a well-resourced vehicle for the conduct,
direction and administration of research in a wide variety of coastal
studies. We seek a researcher to develop the ICR to its full potential
and to lead interdisciplinary research programs with a focus on best use
of coastal resources. We define best use as that which creates
conditions for community and individual health to flourish in BCs many
coastal communities, both large and small.
Although our Faculty of Science is strong and includes several resource
management programs, we are deliberately positioning the ICR as an
interdisciplinary forum supporting broad-based inquiries, studies that
will guide policy makers to the best, evidence-based decisions. This
research will not only be cognizant of science and technology but will
also look well beyond these disciplines in seeking to transcend the
polarized viewpoints that often emerge in resource discussions. The
successful candidate may come from a social science or humanities
background. Areas of inquiry may include the attitudes of coastal peoples
toward their environment and resources, political forces influencing
management decisions, economic factors in resource management policy, and
others. The research will be designed so that its outcomes may contribute
to solutions to resource policy issues.
The successful candidate will be chosen primarily on the basis of the
ability to form collaborative and effective interdisciplinary teams from
both faculty within Malaspina and researchers from other institutions. In
bringing together diverse perspectives and segments of knowledge on
coastal issues, the ideal candidate would possess strong interpersonal
skills and have some experience with resolving conflicts. The anticipated
research will be innovative, will involve the communities and relevant
stakeholders, and will be disseminated to a wide audience. In addition to
the above research activities the candidate will be able to and is
expected to steer the ICR to its full potential in our institution; in
short to develop a new research institution from the ground up.
About the Institute for Coastal Research
Building on our strengths as a regional university and our history of
applied research, Malaspina
University-College is developing a major new strategic initiative in the
establishment of an Institute for Coastal Research . This Institute will
have an interdisciplinary research mandate focusing on coastal
communities of the British Columbia and the Pacific North West. The
Institute for Coastal Research seeks to conduct internationally
respected, interdisciplinary research involving the natural sciences, the
social sciences and the humanities. The focus is on understanding and
promoting the resilience of our coastal communities.
About Malaspina University-College
Malaspina University-College is a public, comprehensive, four-year
institution serving students in the region of central Vancouver Island
and coastal British Columbia. Our main campus is located on the
slopes of Mount Benson, overlooking the beautiful harbour city of
Nanaimo; regional campuses are located in Duncan and Powell River, and
there is a centre in Parksville.
The unique university college concept was established in British Columbia
in 1989 by the provincial government and combines the best of the
Canadian university and college traditions. Our mandate is provided
by the B.C. College and Institute Act and related legislation. As
specified in the Act, our governance structure is composed of a Board of
Governors and an Education Council with shared responsibilities.
Malaspina proudly offers a wide range of high-quality academic, applied,
career/technical, vocational, and developmental programs leading to
degrees, diplomas and certificates. Teaching excellence and student
success are stressed in all programs, and faculty engage in a diversity
of scholarly activities. Classes are small, allowing individual and
direct communication among faculty, staff and students. In 2004-05,
over 13,500 individual students (5,941 full-time equivalent) are enrolled
in credit programs; 10% of the student population is of aboriginal

as well as with sister colleges, universities, governments, trade and
industry in Australia, China, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy,
Japan, Korea, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Taiwan, Thailand, and
the United States of America.
Capital improvements and future capital plans reflect the escalating
growth of our program offerings and our student population, as well as
the rapid growth of the mid Vancouver Island region and Nanaimo, in
particular.
As one of the largest public employers in the City of Nanaimo, Malaspina
University-College offers employees the opportunity to enjoy a
stimulating and diverse workplace, with the added assurance of excellent
