Background
As many of you know, preventable humanitarian crisis, affecting more than five million people, continues to rage in the Darfur region of western Sudan. Not since the Rwanda genocide of 1994 has the world seen such a calculated campaign of slaughter, rape, starvation, and displacement. Government-backed militias, known collectively as the Janjaweed, are systematically eliminating entire communities of African tribal farmers. Villages are being razed, women and girls routinely raped and branded, men and boys murdered, food and water targeted and destroyed.
According to recent reports by the World Food Program, the United Nations and the Coalition for International Justice, 3.5 million people are now hungry, 2.5 million have been displaced due to violence, and 400,000 people have died in Darfur thus far. Without timely intervention to feed and protect them, many more Dafurians will die.
Action Alert
On September 21st, 2005, leaders of major American organizations—from religious groups to humanitarian aid organizations—will meet in Washington DC at a National Leadership Assembly to urge elected officials to express the strong commitment of American citizens for timely, concrete action on behalf of the people of Darfur.
To support this critical effort, the Save Darfur Coalition is asking us to encourage our local constituents, family, friends and others, to join us in sending the message to Congress, that we require action to stop the genocide in Darfur now.
By taking two minutes to click on and scroll toward the end of the following link, you can send this message to President Bush and to Congress. In two minutes you can make a difference in the lives of the people of Darfur.
