James, I dealt with this issue yesterday when discussing Social Stratification.
Here's what I do: 1. I indicate that information based on "personal experiences" is very limited and should not be generalized to the larger macro population. 2. I discuss the "fallacy of the dramatic instance" where a very *vivid* *dramatic* instance gains much media publicity and leads people to generalize to the larger population. E.G. Welfare Cadillac song based on case where women on welfare drove a Cadillac and Johnny Cash wrote a song about it. 3. I discuss WEALTHFARE where corporations, are given tons of money and the local, state and national govt. get little in return for such. Paul Klugman wrote a great article documenting such in TIME magazine. Reprinted in ANNUAL EDITIONS: SOCIOLOGY. Can anyone point me to studies of the amount of fraud in programs like food stamps, welfare, etc?
