I'm teaching an urban poverty course in the spring and was wondering
if anyone could recommend any readings for the following topics.
1) Homelessness during the 1980s (I like Liebow's book on Homeless
women, but I'd like another short reading that provides more context.)
2) Gentrification (I'd prefer something about recent developments, but
something older or more general would be okay.
3) Urban poverty in a global context (I'm planning on showing Born
into Brothels and want to relate the problems of urban poverty in
places like Calcutta back to Marx's arguments about peasants being
forced off the land. So I need an article/chapter that deals
specifically with urban poverty in less developed countries rather than
just poverty.
