What a wonderful statement, Susan. It can be a source of sustenance for all of
us, since we seldom know whether we have had an impact (and whether that
impact has been a good one! L
). However….you write,
“Finally, my professors probably had no idea of the impact they did have, or how
well their teaching served me in the long run.
That is unfortunate.” Several years ago I
decided to remedy that. I actually wrote
letters to all of those teachers who had had a powerful positive impact. I took a week or so to write them—I believe it
was during a December break—but sent letters of appreciation to some folks who
mean t a lot to me. I am very glad I did. And having received a few such letters myself,
I can tell you it is incredible boost to one’s morale!!! One letter like that can carry you for a
