science may be a tool, but it is one that is utilized by humans; as yet, I am unaware of any human behavior that is not value-driven, including the application of the scientific method.
furthermore, if anyone doubts that science has a humanistic bent, just try and conduct research without IRB approval; in other words, IRB's are designed to ensure humanism within the context of scientific research. humanism = values.
