my approach to attendance is to leave attendance up to my students. i "encourage" their attendance by randomly scheduling 10 in-class assignments throughout the semester, however.

each assignment is worth 10 points toward their cumulative score (500 points). to obtain the 10 points, they must:

1) be present
2) fully participate

typically, what i do is some kind of small group activity, like complete a budget for families at different income levels. i divide the class into groups, pass out the budget, walk around the room, checking in, asking questions, making comments, etc. at the end, i have students put their names on the budget (or i send around a sign-in sheet) so i can provide them with the 10 points.

if they miss that day, then they lose the 10 points.

i don't have any data on whether or not this increases attendance, but there are data that support this kind of approach to getting the behavior that you want from people (intermittent-reinforcement schedules).
