Hi, Sarah and other dear teachers. I don't have an attendance policy, so it's relatively easy for me to say this. I would say absolutely not. That's somewhere between half and a third of the course and I don't teach correspondance school. I would recommend that she take a semester leave of absence if she absolutely had to take the six week pleasure trip. There's a reason students are supposed to come to class and it ain't just to get the material; it's to get guided instruction from a professional in the field. Doing all the work by herself is not the same as learning it in a class taught by someone with a PhD.
My $0.02. As always, A.

Hi all...I'm just wondering what might be the most constructive way to respond to a student e-mail stating that the student was missing the first 6 weeks of class (there are 14 weeks in the semester), and could I please give her all the work for those weeks in advance. (I mentioned this story light-heartedly yesterday.) She was traveling for pleasure, she told me. Her other profs. obliged with the work, as did I. Yet I'm not so sure this was fair to the other students, since there is an attendance policy.
