Hi Sarah and fellow teachers,
I'd ask her how an employer might feel about such a request. ("Yes, I know, I
didn't clear my vacation with you in advance, but I really wanted to go....and
it was only six weeks..."). Then I'd suggest she drop my course and take it at
some point in the future when she could actually do the work. No way in hell
would I allow her to make up work past due dates. I do not see that as being at
all fair to the other students in the class, nor do I see it as passing on a
"life lesson" with which I'm particularly comfortable.
This is emphatically _not_ a dig at you or your colleagues. I disagree with the
actions you folks took, but I'm not ready to read you out of the profession. I
simply think that we need to help students learn to plan, meet deadlines, and
perform other behaviors that will be expected of them out in the
not-so-forgiving world outside our classrooms. Better they fuck up in my class
and fail than get fired from their first real job, IMHO. This is an area in
which well-meaning people can have honest disagreements, obviously.
