James, I was writing from memory, without having the article in front of me, so I didn't have all the details about quantity and length (and we still don't know how many days "days" is, to be Clintonian about it).
I agree with you that it ought to be put in the syllabus. I always allow students the option to revise and resubmit their papers, and I grade them fairly stringently so as to encourage rewriting. I am usually disappointed at how few students use that option.
