just got back in my office from hearing Daryl Davis talking about his experience with Klan members. He is African-American and through his friendship with Klansmen and women over the last 20 years or so, has had many of them turn in their robes and other paraphenalia to him. just amazing. he kept saying, "now, i'm not a psychologist or a sociologist, just a regular guy, and if i can do this, anyone can." i told him afterward that he IS a sociologist and his work is fantastic.
if you can get him to your campus and/or professional organization, do it, he is incredible. he is a professional musician (plays with Chuck Berry occasionally) and does this on the side. he has a great multimedia presentation that includes clips from CNN and Geraldo, actual Klan robes, hood, etc. (he got one from a Grand Dragon), flags, etc. wonderful presentation.
