I forgot to indicate that in the case of the restaurant the patrons were seated by the management. When you arrive you give your name and preference, smoking, non smoking, or first available. The seating I observed was non smoking. Regarding the Choir etc I would assume that seating was based on voice tenor, etc.
This is not self selection we see in the dining hall. I have had several class discussions on this. Students have complained that if they sit with the others they are criticized... you think you're better than us? I find that my daughter (now 23) still goes out with groups separately. At college we would usually go out one night for diner with here friends.... here black friends never joined us.... said yes but dropped out at the last minute. I recently noticed that when my wife and I entertain (outside of the family) > half of those present are people of color. We have attended too many funerals recently ..... but there I have noticed more white people at black funerals than black people at white funerals... not unexpected. Del Del Thomas Ph.
