Well, since I am a state employee, I suppose my salary is available to all
who seek it. So let me just tell you up front and save you the effort.

I was hired last August as a "new" first year, Assistant Professor. My years
of experience were not negotiable (we have a union contract). Our starting
salary for a first year Ph.D. was $44,500.00. I actually took a pay cut to
come here.

Last year (prior to the hurricane), I took a position at Xavier University
of Louisiana (New Orleans), and was hired there as a first year Associate
Professor at $47,500.00.

social stratification and the cost of raising a family)

Subject: TEACHSOC: How much is that sociologist in the window?

We may be making offers to job candidates in a week or two, and I'd like
some sense of what other institutions are paying for new or nearly new
Ph.D.s in sociology. I know my dean thinks we're a dime a dozen, and I
want to put something a bit more fact-based in his ear. Feel free to
e-mail me privately.
