I question the conceptualization ‘smothering
mothers’ and suggest this student examine cross-cultural childrearing
patterns. A good resource is Jaipaul L. Roopnarine & Uwe P. Gielen’s
2005 Families in Global Perspective (Allyn
& Bacon, ISBN 0-205-33574-8). In particular, the following chapters
offer insights that may encourage her to think critically and sociologically
about this “concept”: “The Changing Japanese Family: A
Psychological Portrait” by Takashi Naito & Uwe P. Gielen, “Norwegian
Families from a Psychocultural Perspective: A Challenge to Therapeutic Theory
and Practice” by Wencke J. Seltzer and From: hi, Sarah I would have her
look at the emotional impact of loss of status, changes in status, etc. i would
also include role change/conflict/stress, etc. Zurcher wrote a nice text on
social roles that includes discussion of these topics (entitled, appropriately
enough, Social Roles). john John E. Glass,
Ph.D. "Some bad
karma is worth it"
