in order to educate my students about the importance of context, i oftentimes will ask (if i have a non-native English speaker in the class) what kind of a sound does a particular animal make in another country. of course, most students will say that a dog makes the same sound wherever it is...but this is not accurate.
now, i don't have to rely on providence, anymore as i have stumbled upon (thanks to boing boing) the animal sound jackpot! a list of many animal noises and how the sounds are represented in different languages so much for the "objectivity" of a particular noise.
hoot away!
