Dear Teaching Sociology-ers,

I've been asked to assist a middle-school teacher in preparing a group of
sixth-graders for their "future-problem-solvers" competition in a few weeks.
The topic is broad, having to do with the re-distribution of wealth. I gather
that students will be required to understand various concepts surrounding
wealth/income inequality -- e.g., equal opportunity, discrimination, social
conflict, ethics and fairness -- and use their understanding to address an
inequality problem set sometime in the future. Beyond these broad outlines I
have little else to go by.

I thought about using the "StarPower" game to illustrate some of the key issues,
but I know there are others sorts of stratification/inequality activities that
might be used to engage these bright sixth-graders and to illustrate some of
these rather abstract ideas. Any help you might offer along these lines would
be greatly appreciated. You can e-mail me privately; I will compile your ideas
and share them at a later time.

Thanks in advance.
