Dear Teaching Sociology-ers, Many thanks to all who responded to my query regarding teaching stratification to sixth grade "future problem solvers". Several great ideas were suggested:
1) stratification monopoly 2) using student grades to illustrate inequalities and stratification 3) the lifeboat game 4) the StarPower game 5) distributing candies to groups in proportion to the US and cross-continent income distribution 6) distributing crayons unequally to illustrate unequal opportunity and the consequences thereof (as in Wetcher-Hendricks and Luquet, Teaching Sociology, 31(3): 345-51). There are other interesting stratification activities described in several issues of Teaching Sociology. For our purposes, the candy game and crayon distribution exercise seemed most appropriate and seemed to work well as judged by the discussions they provoked, feedback from my daughter (very willing to critique her father) and some of her friends, and the teacher. We shall see how they do in the competition. Either way, it was a joy to work with such enthusiastic learners. Once more, many many thanks to those who offered suggestions. What a wonderful listserv. -bobw **************************************************************************** "The truth is that all men having power ought to be mistrusted." -- James Madison /\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\ Robert R.
