Hi all,

I've been thinking about the discussion we had a couple weeks ago about the usefulness (or not) of using journal articles in undergraduate sociology classes.  I'm aware of the challenges, but I'm also of the opinion that we should find a way to incorporate journal articles (and the search for them) into our courses since it is through publication in journals and the review of scholarly literature that the discipline develops.

I've also been thinking that it would be useful to identify key journal articles that have been particularly influential in the different sub-fields of sociology.  Perhaps we could use these key journal articles as ways of introducing to our students the ways that research and publishing contribute to our understanding of the social world.  I'm interested less in the "classic" examples that you often find in readers, but some of the more recent articles that have shaped the field.

Toward that end, I propose an informal survey of the teachsoc members.  You can respond to me privately or to the list.  Either way, I will make the findings available to all of us in a couple weeks.  The questions are simply:

!. What three subfields of sociology are you the most familar with in your teaching and research? (political sociology, gender, sociology of education, theory, environmental sociology, etc.)

2. For EACH of your areas of expertise, which three academic journal articles do you think have been the most influential for the sub-field over the past 10-15 years?

3. Bonus question: For each of your areas of expertise, which three BOOKS of the past 10-15 years have been the most influential in the sub-field?

Of course, you may list only one or two areas of expertise, and only one or two (or more) influential books and articles.

just curious,
Robert
