hi, Rhonda i don't have a specific reference to the use of the term, "conflict theory" as an umbrella idea, but a place i would look would be the Frankfurt school. they were active before Parsons hit his pinnacle, so i would think that they would pre-date him. they were definitely doing much of their work prior to the 1960's though.
