I've used "Southern Comfort" a few times in classes (Medical Sociology, Sociology of Gender), and I find it takes a *lot* of prep before and after for students to be able to get anything out of it beyond a sort of crass voyeurism, and I teach New York City students who are sure they've seen everything. I find it's a great tool for teaching about transgender issues, but not great for gay/lesbian issues.
For gay/lesbian issues, you might try "Daddy and Pappa," about two gay dads. I used this last semester in my Soc of Gender course, and was surprised at how powerful students found this film. Apparently, gay men parenting goes right to the heart of some of the homophobic opposition to gay rights (such as gay marriage). I liked it too because it deals (at least a little) with racial issues.
On a somewhat related note, you might take a look at the film "Nazi Doctors" for a link to the abortion / stem cell / eugenics debate.
And, on sex trafficking... there's an excellent article by Alice Miller of Columbia called "The Dilemmas of Contemporary Anti-Trafficking Work," available here:

Hi -- for reasons I don't completely understand (I thought you got immunity from new preps after 30 years!), I will be teaching a senior seminar next year on criminal justice and morality (in other words, should these things be against the law). We will be using a text that covers drugs, prostitution, abortion, pornography, homosexuality and gambling. I like to have students present at least two sides of issues, and then have a class debate. Probably I will direct the abortion debate to stem cell theory research, and use queer theory heavily to avoid the homosexuality and deviance quagmire. If anyone has seen any good articles, short cheap books, videos, class exercises, fuzzy dice or whatever, please let me know. Has anyone used the video Southern Comfort? Perhaps I could do sex trafficking, but I'd have to see who is in the class -- I did a lot on it in my violence against women class last year.
I'm sure you could post any answers, but private suggestions to [EMAIL PROTECTED] would be just as appreciated. Thanks in advance.
