I highly recommend two books by Annette Lareau: Unequal Childhoods: Race, Class & Family Life (2003, University of CA) and Home Advantage: Social Class and Parental Intervention in Elementary School (2000, Rowman & Littlefield). Both books address how social capital is used to advantage some kids and disadvantage others in the educational system and other institutions.
I used Home Advantage in a sociology of education class that was 50% Education majors with good success. The students both soc majors and education majors seemed to find the book thought provoking. I have a colleague who used Unequal Childhoods in a stratification course also with good success.
