Let's not forget that Mitchell Duneier wrote a devastating critique of Heat Wave in Contemporary Sociology.  I both love the book AND think the critique is brilliant.  It would be a good exercise to have the class read the review after they read Heat Wave. It could generate lots of discussion about methods, theory, how we understand race in this country, and just what the measure of a good book is.

You might find Michaela di Leonardo's review of Klinenberg, "Murder by Public Policy" useful. It is in the Nation, September 1/9 2002, 31-35. Barbara Chasin

There was an editorial about the book in the Chicago Tribune (chicagotribune.com) this past Sunday--I still haven't read in detail, but may be interesting to consider when assigning to classes. Adair Quoting [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
This is an excellent book! Great sociological analysis of the human-made elements of a natural distater. I am thinking of using it as a way for the students to think to about Hurricane Katrina. They could review Klinenberg's discussion of a "social autopsy" and then devise a parallel one for Katrina. Erin Steuter Mount Allison University
