Hi Jack
Your colleugue Betsy here. Posting on Tech Soc for the first time. I
just laughed my rear off looking at this video. I grew up just outside
of Greenwich, CT in a town very like it, with country clubs and
yatching people and vacationers in Nantucket. And of course, I was
different as well (I always called those chicks the "sweaters and
pearls girls"). Anyway, I think it would be fun to show this video as
an example of how the category 'white' is an ethnicity. But it would
probably work best in setting that is homogenously white, and the
students are privileged, and unaware of themselves as an ethnic
category. or as a race, for that matter.
So here at BMCC, which is about 10% white, and not privileged in any
way, I'm not sure how it would come across. I'm interested to hear
others' responses to viewing this video.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth (Betsy) Wissinger
BMCC/CUNY
Betsy, do you suppose you could let the rest of us in on where to see the video in question? I'm on a 95+% white campus (working and middle class, though).
