Title: TEACHSOC: New to Sociology

From: [email protected] on behalf of alyssa
I am teaching Introduction to Sociology for the first time this
semester and am looking for good resources/books/ideas to give me a
stronger foundation of Sociology, as by background is in Psychology.
Also, I am looking for exercises (prefer. experientia)l to do in class
with my students.

Welcome to the list, Alyssa.

First, I would recommend visiting the ASA Teaching Resources Center to look at materials.  Go to  http://www.e-noah.net/asa/asashoponlineservice/productslist.aspx?CategoryID=ASATT&selection=11.  Many wonderful materials are available there, but for Intro, I would probably start with Innovative Techniques for Teaching Sociological Concepts (Fourth Edition) edited by Sandi Kawecka Nenga and Edward L. Kain.  You MIGHT also want to look at Introductory Sociology Resource Manual  compiled by James Sikora and Teodora Amoloza--also at the same place.

In addition, there are wonderful active learning ideas in Sociology through Active Learning: Student Exercises.  Kathleen McKinney, Frank D. Beck, and Barbara S. Heyl, editors. Thousand Oaks, CA: Pine Forge Press. 2001. ISBN: 0-7619-8719-3  (Also has an Instructor's Manual with background on each student exercise and further suggestions for use.)
