Francis Marion University seeks applications for two tenure-track assistant
professor positions, to start August, 2007. We need one colleague with
specialization in gerontology and medical sociology to assume responsibility
for courses in sociology of health, gerontology, and death & dying. We need
another colleague with specialization in crime and delinquency to assume
responsibility for courses in criminology, delinquency, and violence. We
are supportive of creating additional courses to address other interests.
Ability to teach sociological theory would be a plus. The teaching load
will be 7 sections for the academic year (4-3 or 3-4). Offering one or two
summer courses is an option. We require only 6 students for summer courses
to make and pay 8.5 percent of base salary per course.

We encourage and support research in several ways. We offer summer research
stipends for assistant professors, available on a competitive basis, with
remuneration equal to one summer course. Up to $2,100 is available to cover
research expenses or travel to meetings when presenting. The department
provides additional small amounts that are unrestricted. A course release
to work on research is available occasionally. Decisions regarding all
those forms of support are made by faculty committees.

Completion of earned doctorate in sociology by starting date is strongly
preferred. Applicants should send letter describing teaching and research
experience and interests, curriculum vitae, and three letters of
recommendation to Joel Thayer, Department of Sociology, Francis Marion
University, Florence, SC 29501-0547. For additional information and the
official listing of these openings, please visit www.fmarion.edu/about/hr.
