Lunch and possibly supper with my parents tomorrow.
I agree with you about retail. Too much greed. I think the stores,
except for food and gas, should be closed on at least Thanksgiving and
Christmas and New Years. When I was working for Delta, I think they had
10 holidays per year, except that some parts of the company were
24/7/365. Frys has an interesting plan. They're letting people reserve
the special deals on Thursday on the website, then pick up the stuff at
the store on Friday. The stores are closed Thursday.
Sincerely,
Ron

So, what are you all planning for the Thanksgiving? Time with
family/friends, sleeping in and not working, or do you have to work?
I'm lucky enough to work where I have Thursday and Friday off from
work. For me, it will be a casual lunch with family, followed by some
target shooting, and a day of laziness on Friday.
While I'm on this subject, I'm going to get on my soapbox for a moment
. . . So, we have a holiday where we are supposed to be expressing
our thankfulness for what we have, and many people spend most of
November listing what they are thankful for on social media. We have
a big meal at lunchtime, visit with family/friends, maybe watch some
football, and then a large chunk of the population heads out for late
night/early morning shopping. They leave all civility at home, and go
into the stores like wild animals, pushing, shoving, and just
generally being rude. What happened to the whole being thankful for
what we have that occurred less than 24 hours before?!
Also, the trend is toward opening earlier, and earlier. A few years
ago, it became common for stores to do really early morning
openings...then midnight openings.. Now stores are opening at
7:00-8:00 PM, and some aren't even closing. While it may seem like a
convenient and fun thing for people to be able to leisurely head out
for some late night shopping after a day of spending time with friends
and family, people do NOT think about the people who have to give up
their holiday off to make that possible. This one hits close to home
for me... My girlfriend works retail for an upscale retailer that has
decided to open early in the evening on Thanksgiving. What does that
mean for us? Well, she has to work into the night tonight, then go
back in the late afternoon, work into the early morning hours, come
home, try to cram in a few hours of sleep, then go back and work all
day on Friday - still tired from the night before on the craziest
retail day of the year. It means that she is not going to be able to
spend time with family a couple of hours away, because that is too
much driving under stress for us in one day to make it back in time
for work. While that may seem bad, I noticed that "Fred's" stores are
opening EARLY on Thanksgiving and staying open, and "Dollar Tree"
stores and Wal-Mart are just operating their regular hours.
Okay, I'm getting down off the soapbox now...it just really has me
steamed that our Thanksgiving together gets ruined because a big
portion of the population can't wait a few more hours to go trample
each other to save a few dollars on something that will probably be
sold out by the time they get there, anyway.
