Hi Jim, I don't use gmail normally. However, I use Eudora OSE which is an older program based on the Thunderbird code base. It was released a few years ago but I don't think it's been updated.
Anyway, I use the pop interface to my email account at 1and1. If I go into the account settings on Eudora then server settings on, there is a setting that says Leave Messages On Server. If that's off, messages are deleted from the server when they're downloaded. However, you can turn that on. Then, a sub section becomes available, and you can say leave on server for a certain number of days and / or until you delete the messages. So, if the "when I delete them" selection is on, when you delete the message on the local client, it will be deleted from the server. I have mine set to delete from the server any messages that are older than 90 days, because I have them on several local clients by then, and also to delete them from the server when I delete them from the local client. By using Thunderbird and the pop interface to gmail, I'll bet you can do the same thing. I get about 300 emails per day from alternate energy mailing lists and such. I don't always see new email messages very quickly.)
