It's my understanding (and experience) depleting a lead acid battery below 50% charge repeatedly will significantly reduce it's life. Bring it down to 0% a couple of times and you don't have much of a battery left. To extend the life of a LA battery don't discharge below 60%.

Also be careful charging sealed LA batteries, they can't take a fast charge like the vented kind.

Jim.

Hi Jim,

You make a very good point. Thanks. I found the following information which corroborates what you said. Apparently, deep cycle batteries tolerate deep cycles but still don't like them. Apparently, starter batteries REALLY don't like deep cycles. Neither type likes being stored at low charge.

I found this table, which explains lead acid battery life:

Depth of Discharge Starter Battery Deep-cycle Battery
100% 12–15 cycles 150–200 cycles
50% 100–120 cycles 400–500 cycles
30% 130–150 cycles 1,000 and more cycles

Here is some good info:

I'm not sure where ups batteries, hand held spotlight batteries, and security system batteries fit in the spectrum between starter and deep-cycle. You'd think they'd be designed for deep cycling. But, I guess it's better not to drain them if you don't have to.

I still think it's a good idea to test ups's occasionally to make sure you're getting the runtime you need, but I may have to do more research on that.

Sincerely,

Ron
