Hi guys,
I've been trying to figure out how to add an ssd to my system. I have a
1 TB spinning hdd for C: and cannot afford a 1 TB SSD. I want to move
most apps and data from C: to something else, like M: (or whatever),
then migrate what's left (including Windows) to a small (and cheaper)
SSD. However, doing that breaks things and screws up all sorts of
settings in the registry, etc. and may cause the programs to
malfunction. I don't want to have to reinstall and reconfigure everything.
I found this neat article that shows a method to fix this problem with
Windows 7.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/nifty-way-safely-move-folders-or-programs-another-drive-or-partition-windows-7.htm
This procedure uses symbolic links to move folders to another drive or
partition while still retaining the appearance to the system of using
the original path. So, executing c:\firefox\firefox.exe (for example)
would actually trigger m:\firefox\firefox.exe and all the registry links
and profile settings would still work.
This sounds really cool and I may end up trying it with a 64 GB or 128
GB SSD as my main drive.
Thought I'd pass it along. I know Linux also has symlinks, so I assume
you could do something similar. I don't know about Mac.
Sincerely,
Ron
