Hi All,

Based on recent password discussions on the DC404 group, I've created a simple spreadsheet which calculates the average time to crack a password with any given amount of entropy. By default, the spreadsheet shows entropy lines from 50 to 128 bits in increments of .25 bits. You can change the starting entropy setting and the increment. The number of total calculation lines remains the same. You can also change the crack engine speed, which defaults to 100 billion guesses / second. Conservative but simplistic recommendations are given for calculating entropy with passwords involving words, digits, and symbols, based on (my interpretation of) discussions with David Tomaschik. If you want to run numbers for a specific entropy, such as 4 words @ 15.8 bits each = 63.2 bits, just put that in as the starting entropy and the answers will show up on the first line.

I mainly built this to scratch my own itch, but anyone is welcome to use it. Let me know what you think. If you want to use it or post it outside this forum, please give me credit and post the file on something besides my dropbox account.

I've tried to check the math, but you may wish to hand check a couple of lines before using it.

Sincerely,

Ron
