Correct, if using sysprep it doesn't matter if you activate or not because sysprep will reset it. With so many different types of SID's now I highly recommend using sysprep.

During sysprep /generalize stage the slmgr /rearm command is performed, meaning any activation of the MAK is erased. You’ll have a 3 day period to reactivate the machines. (They’ll also prompt the end user at the end of the 3 days and everything will be fine, if you trust teachers not to call you up and just walk through the process.) However, you can also build an unattend.xml file with the <skiprearm>1</skiprearm> command. This will eliminate the rearming process. This however is not recommended with MAK keys because your count will no longer increase during deployments, making Microsoft very unhappy. Since KMS keys talk to a server, the count continues to be accurate regardless. This was one of the main reasons we started using KMS keys. However, if you’re not using Sysprep, I would recommend activating the MAK keys after imaging anyway, so you stay current to your software license agreement count. Are you doing a KMS or MAK license? For KMS you have to have 25 win 7 machines that you are looking to deploy. You are not going to activate before the image. Win 7 also has a different sysprep than XP as with the activation the machines have to be completely different in all of their settings. Sysprep has a generalize part that will make the image different for each machine. I think this is actually different than just changing the SID. You can also do it after wards, but before the reimaging looks the easiest. Here a few places that I have found in the last few days that may help. <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303695.aspx#_Volume_Activation_Management>http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc303695.aspx#_Volume_Activation_Management <http://www.windows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/649-how-can-i-setup-a-kms-server/page__s__67bcd561436fbc078d42f445226f15b2>http://wwwwindows-noob.com/forums/index.php?/topic/649-how-can-i-setup-a-kms-server/page__s__67bcd561436fbc078d42f445226f15b2 Today hopefully I hit my 25 and see my KMS system spring into action, I am trying to be patient with this.
