If the old server is really gone ... then ... go into DNS and create a
C-name (alias) for the new server using the same name as the old server.
Then when the embedded UNC link is called it should work because it will
substitute the old name and still follow a path to the folder on the new
server.

That said - once it is working it is best if users organize in folders
rather than mass dumping their video files in a single folder so they
can recover from these issues. Just best house keeping practice on
their part.

ANOTHER trick for PPT specifically is once the link works is to use the
PPT Pack and Go or Package for CD option. Menu title depends on version
of PPT, but it has been there since PPT 95 days. Anyway when it
works use that menu choice to consolidate the ppt and all the ancillary
attached files in one place if you need to move them around.

Lots or rambling, but in business the standard process for
decommissioning a server and still retaining backward compatibility is
to add an alias to the new server with the exact name of the old server
via the C-name record.

Subject: [tech-geeks] PowerPoint linked movies not working

Geeks,

I have a user that has a boatload of PowerPoint presentations that have
linked movies. Unfortunately, PowerPoint embeds the UNC path instead of
the drive letter path. The server that the movies were on is being
removed from the domain. Does anybody know of a way to mass fix the
links? Preferably, free.

Thanks.
