The other disadvantage that I've personally observed over the years is that A+ is perceived by IT Departments not as indicative of work ethic and initiative, but born of an individual's desire to work with hardware rather than software, and individual machines rather than systems. Frankly, I'd do Network+ over A+, unless your son wants to be pigeonholed into hardware work for the next 5 years of his life. IMHO, Network+ shows a desire and initiative to work on *systems of devices*, rather than individual devices (which indicates that he's thinking more in line with the bigger picture). Or it indicates that he's interested in networking. ;)
If he just wants these credentials for a job, heck -- do them both. They're cheaper tests and it probably wouldn't take more than a month a piece to thoroughly study/learn them. On the flip side, I think everyone can learn something from taking the A+. It's not all worthless history, and in cases where it is, it was interesting to me to know why "we've always done it that way." David P. My personal experience with the A+ exam was that I regret wasting the time on it. Sure, it's nice to know how a daisy wheel printer works versus a dot matrix printer, but none of that really seems to help me with anything in this century. Sure, there were more relevant topics in other areas, but overall I'd say less than 50% of the questions on my exam were relevant to anything I've done.
