If there are hardware problems and you can still spin the drive up, you might 
want to true using dd/ddrescue to make a copy of the drive while it's still 
somewhat functional.
 
If you have data you want to recover that may or may not have been written 
over, try using photorec. You can install photorec (and testdisk for recovering 
partitions) on most linux distros. 
 
You can also try using Ubuntu Rescue Remix (http://ubuntu-rescue-remix.org/) 
which is a LiveCD that comes with many recovery/forensics tools pre-installed, 
including testdisk and photorec.
