What this SHOULD mean is that ICN will bring fiber to some smaller communities and work with ICN eligible institutions - libraries, local governments, schools, hospitals, etc. - to come up with a way to better leverage and share the resources provided by the ARRA grants. It is the "last mile" that is many cases is more like that "last 30 miles" that is the problem. If we can get the "last mile" down to a "mile" then we would all be winners in this.

But I don't know what it WILL mean.

Does this mean ICN may put more POP sites? Anyone know the details of their plan?

Greetings,

We are excited to share the news that our Illinois Broadband Opportunity Partnership - East Central Region BTOP application has been awarded $62M in ARRA funding! The grant funds will support the implementation of a fiber network throughout a 55-county region of northeastern, central and eastern Illinois. This network will address a lack of suitable broadband access for community anchor institutions in many of the region’s rural and economically distressed counties. The award announcement and a project fact sheet is available on the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) website http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2010/08/18/vice-president-biden-announces-recovery-act-investments-broadband-projec. A map of the fiber network is attached.

Today, NTIA also announced an award to one of our partner projects, the Illinois Broadband Opportunity Partnership Southern Region, to build fiber in 22 southern counties.

We will share more details of the project during the regional meetings scheduled for October. An email with dates and locations will be coming soon. Our project includes funding to extend the fiber network to as many as 400 community anchor institutions. During the coming months, we will be reaching out to these institutions and the surrounding community to discuss this opportunity in more detail.

Thank you for your overwhelming support. Throughout the review process we received many compliments from the NTIA review team regarding the letters of support and level of detail provided regarding your broadband needs and challenges. Your collaboration and support were key factors in our success.
