I do that too. I have a local admin account that I call sadmin, short for Student Administrator, that I give to a few kids. I change the password each year in case it gets out. Sure they can get on a machine and wreck it but at least it is not the whole domain. Only the very best and most trustworthy kids get this. Second year kids I try to find a work place that they can spent two days a week (about 3 hours) at for some additional real experience. This helps them from getting to bored at WACC.
Something else that, sometimes puts me in a tough spot, is that the kids will tell me, at their home districts, how they are able to get into admin accounts etc... and see stuff that they should not see. I tell them that if they share this type of information with me that I would have to report it. I had one kid, after he graduated, who hacked the principles email, a few years ago, and sent a email to another kids parents telling them that their son has been caught in the shower masturbating numerous times. How to you respond to something like this? They get a machine level administrator password but no network administrator privileges. Helps a lot to have a kid that can run around and trouble shoot, kill bugs, and do installs. Requirement is that they have to keep at least a "C" in courses. That has been my bugaboo for the past two years. None of the three I had working can keep their English grade above a "D". -----Original Message----- From: tech-geeks-boun...@tech-geeks.org [mailto:tech-geeks-boun...@tech-geeks.org] On Behalf Of JimHays Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2010 11:14 AM To: Tech-Geeks Mailing List Subject: Re: [tech-geeks] Geeky Students I had one of those "geeky students" who worked here in the summers from the time he was in 7th grade until he graduated. He is now at the U of I and just completed an internship with Microsoft in Redmond. He works at the Best Buy Geek Squad and can be seen on Channel 3 News' Gadget Guy segment. Smart kid.
