We installed wireless in 5 buildings this summer. We used Cisco 1231
WAPs that we purchased used from EBay at about $160 each. We put them
mostly at the end of hallways with flat patch antennae pointed toward
the classrooms. With that setup they read about 150 feet down the
hallways and into classrooms. Before placement, we placed a test unit at
the end of the hall and, using our cell phones with a wifi analysis ap -
one on an iPhone and one on an HTC Droid Incredible, we tested the
signal to make sure that it covered the area we needed. After noting how
far that WAP covered, we moved the test unit to the next location and
tested from there.
We averaged about 5 WAPs per building with more at the high school.
