I found in my case the following happened.

A colleague was consulting to this company about better understanding the 
education space.

They gave them my name, among others. They also suggested that the sales rep. 
Subscribe here to better understand the needs of ed. Tech folk.

When they saw an email from me go past they used the email address to contact 
me, a mistake they have since learned from. I have been assured that this 
misunderstanding of geek netiquete will not reoccur. If it does they'll be 
assigned to chatting with our stupid question of the day folks every day till 
.....
