I'm curious what other districts, especially those running Skyward, are doing
with homebound students. For clarification, we are talking about students who
are simply too ill to attend school. This can range from a broken bone (the
student being out for an extended period of time) to severe handicaps (the
student being out on an indefinite leave due to a disease like cancer or due to
severe allergies). We are finding an increasing amount of students who are now
homebound, and leaving them enrolled in our facilities seems to wreak havoc on
many things, not the least of which is SIS and attendance.

For SIS, there isn't a withdrawal type for a student going to homebound status,
but we have an internal withdrawal type. Unfortunately, this is not a
state-recognized withdrawal, so the student is never really withdrawn on the
State side. As a result, the student will kick back errors that need to be
manually fixed on a constant basis.

As far as attendance goes, these types of students shouldn't be included in the
ADA reports, but their attendance still has to be reported (we report the
attendance from our students via our Special Ed co-op). While they would be
reasonably easy to filter out of ADA reports via student type, we are finding
an issue with how their attendance is to be reported. Per State code, one hour
of instructional time for a homebound student counts as a half-day of
attendance. If they have four hours of instructional time, it counts as a full
day of attendance.

We considered putting them in a different 'school', but obviously the State
wouldn't issue an RCDTS code strictly for this. We thought about just creating
a new student code for these students, but that still leaves the attendance
issue. Add to all this the fact that it's a person in our Special Ed co-op
responsible for the maintaining of these students, and the issue gets further
complicated (I don't want to give just ONE person access to all the students in
all of our schools so she can maintain a couple hundred students out of the
4500+ in our district).

Again, I'm just looking for some thoughts, or information on how other
districts are handling these students.

Thanks,

Mike
