Shouldn't need to sink a ton of money into something decent.  I5s are fine,
even the previous generation Core2s should be fine. 4GB of memory would
probably help more than any processor upgrade if they are using Windows 7
(if you are using 32 bit it will cutoff some of the memory though).

SSDs are nice, but you are talking $50 to $250 or so depending on what they
would be charging for the HD/SSD.  If you got it to burn it is a very nice
upgrade though.

You would be better off replacing the machine in 3-4 years though than
trying to spend a lot of money trying to get it to last 5-6 though.
