did you install OpenSSH when setting up the server?
if not you need to:
# sudo apt-get install openssh-server openssh-client

root login is disabled by default on Ubuntu

login w/ userID created when setting up the server.

to make changes you then need to:  sudo <command>  {it will prompt for PW}

if you plan to make a lot of changes & don't want to type sudo over & over
type:  sudo su
type in PW of the user you made when creating the server
voila! you are now super user - make sure you use this power for good not evil

>>> Michael Bendorf <bendo...@gmail.com> 9/23/2010 9:14 AM >>>
it did before though...

And I cannot log in a root - I can probably make the needed changes to allow a
root log-in, but I have not done so yet...

hmmm - I am sitting at physical machine now and cannot log in via console.
I type the user name and press enter - instead of being asked for a
password, I am told immediately:

Login incorrect

I have used Webmin to create a new user and trying that username I get the
same results.

I've started googleing this, but nothing helpful so far.

I have never seen this where I am not asked for a password - just kicked
right out. After five fails I amd told:

Maximum number of tries exceeded (5)

It seems I can keep going in circles here.

I can connect through Webmin. My AD users have access to their samba shares.
This is also my postfix machine and mail is flowing - I just cannot get a
real shell: either ssh or true console...

hmm. i don't know much about pam. but google turned this up:

http://forums.zybez.net/topic/1413358-pam-opensshd/

one thing them mention is a UsePAM option in sshd config.

also are you using non-standard ports?

there is nothing in Webmin's User and Groups module that leads me to believe
I should need a new password - and the other server I stood up the same day

I think it is something deeper - with PAM or something? not clear what PAM
does exactly, though, so not sure there...
