For those of you in other parts of the state,
The LTC2 ROE has done a great job with the NFI conference. This year they're
moving away from curriculum based conversations and going over that dreaded
topic of security.

***What is NFI***
NFI (Networking For Information) happens every year in November out at Eagle
Ridge in Galena. It runs for a day and a half, and the topic always focuses on
something related to technology in education. While the sessions themselves are
usually quite valuable, people tend to come whether the topic is critical to
them or not. The reason? The NETWORKING! The opportunities to build
relationships with and talk to others who have walked a mile in your shoes are
invaluable. More district technology problems are solved at NFI than you can
imagine! We have always had a wonderful vendor who treats us to a great dinner
in Galena (this year, H2IT and CISCO Systems), and then we usually come back to
the lounge at Eagle Ridge for more conversations and sometimes, when we’re
really lucky, some great entertainment.

***What's going on at NFI this year***
Description:
This is an event you can’t afford to miss! This session will begin by looking
at some of the legal and insurance liability issues districts now face related
to technology. Participants will then examine eight types of technology
security threats confronting districts, including network security; data and
identity theft; inappropriate content; cyberbullying; predators; inappropriate
uses of the network; copyright infringement; misuse of mobile communication
devices. Participants will create a framework of policies, procedures,
trainings and hardware/ software systems that districts should have in place to
address those threats.

Teams of technology coordinators and administrators are encouraged to attend.
The session is based on the book "Security vs. Access: Balancing Safety and
Productivity in the Digital School." Conference fee includes the cost of the
book ($22) (registrations received after October 12th may not receive the book
at the conference). Administrators' Academy credit.

Dinner Tuesday night at Vinny Vanucchi’s in Galena is sponsored by H2IT and
CISCO Systems!

You must make your own room reservation at Eagle Ridge. Call 1-800-892-2269 and
ask for the rooms held for the Learning Technology group to get a special
conference rate (block released Oct. 11).

The topic this November 9-10 is Balancing Technology Security and Education:
How Secure Do We Need To Be? You can register on our website:

I don't know if Lori can come up with any funds to raffle anything of (feast
buck style) or not, but I'm sure I can come up with autographed pictures of my
family members or something if that somehow entices people to attend!
