We have stereo receivers and indoor/outdoor speakers mounted in the corners and
I couldn’t be happier with the solution. It does take quite a bit of cabling
to get everything tied together but the end result works very well and is very
clean. We have our receivers/DVDplayers/VCR’s in a wall mounted cabinet cube
enclosure that’s about 22” cubed. The speaker wires come into that box as well
as a video cable going to the projector and stereo rca cables that go to the
vga wallplate for the computer. Then the computer hooks to that wall plate.

This overcame a couple hurdles for us:

1) If you do 2.1 speaker systems they sound great but generally only allow
for one input so then what to do about the DVD/VCR? Obviously there’s options
here, but the receivers have built in selection switches/ports.

2) Everything on/around the teacher’s desk gets pulled out in the summer
for cleaning, by putting the console type equipment in a wall mounted cabinet
it’s permanent and one less thing for me to hook back up before school starts.

I had indeed thought of a 2.1 system already - we have one at church that works
nicely, but it is limited. I suppose that should not preclude me from looking
at other systems than the one we use there.

Has anyone on this list used a sound bar before? Either at home or at work? I'm
curious about both implementations...

Our HS principal has been buying an amplifier and a pair of indoor/outdoor
speakers like you suggest and they are working well for us but I have been
looking for a better solution. I think the Vizio sound bar looks like a good
possibility. And $100 sure beats $300. Of course, little ole cheap me tries
to get the cost closer to $25 per room so I am looking at something more like
this:

I have a similar system - a bit smaller than this - in a 5th grade classroom
and it is working well. The key is the sub to get the added volume. The
$10-15 sets don't give the volume needed. But a $25 set with a sub is loud
enough for the classroom.

very interesting - I was about to purchase a simple stereo reviver and a pair
of indoor/outdoor speakers for a use where the sound-bar idea might be both
cleaner and cheaper.

I have not had experience with these sound bars: they will indeed fill a good
sized classroom with decent sound during a dialog heavy film?
