Sorry for the incomplete thought: We warn students and teachers that the
process will reformat their flash drive.

(This is one of the problems in starting a response before getting called away
from your desk to put out a "fire" burning elsewhere.)

We have declared that U3 is programa-non-grata and offer manufacturer-supplied
executables to strip U3 off flash drives. We warn students and teachers that
the process

That's all we need - students and teachers bringing USB hacking toolkits to
school. Portableapps drives are nearly as bad, but people don't come to us
with those issues.

Subject: [tech-geeks] Managing San-Disk and Sony USB Memory Keys

We're getting more and more students carrying flash drives that want to install
their own management and protection software. The San-Disk Cruiser is a
perfect example, want to install it's U3 software. It fails to install, and
then they come looking for me to do it. How are you handling memory devices
that want to install software on your student machines? Even some of our
teachers want us to give them administrative privileges so they can use them at
whatever PC they sit down at. It's becoming a daily problem for us.
