I have two of the iomega ix4-200d units at home. Really like them, but did some looking in support issues. There are several people who have had firmware problems with them. Much like any other technology. If I needed to put something in at school I would probably go with Overland (snapserver) if I was buying an appliance. Otherwise I tend to roll my own box with more drive space than I now what is good for me. I have a unit I have been planning which is a simple generic RM server. I have about 1.4TB of onboard storage. I am adding two esata cards and attaching two external trays which can handle 4TB each. The entire setup will take up 9U in my rack. When all is said and done, I will have about 10TB of consolidated drive space. It will do what I want to do.
Is this the best way to get 10TB of storage space, probably not, but the overall cost is probably going to be 2500 bucks as opposed to say 4500 for an 8TB snapserv. I will not have the built in tools but it will be Linux so I can add what I want. It's purpose is nothing more than bulk media storage. Now if I want to back it up, I need a mirror unit and that is just not possible so hopefully I only ever put insignificant media on it! For everything you put in make sure you have a way to backup the crucial stuff in the event of emergency! -Heath Henderson On Oct 5, 2010, at 2:47 PM, "Kenny, David" <dke...@district100.com> wrote: > Depends how much space you’re looking to add.
