The book that carried me through deployment was "Mastering VMware
Infrastructure 3" by Chris McCain. I did pick up Scott Lowe's book "VMware
vSphere 4 Administration Instant Reference" which is a bit smaller; I'm
hoping to rely more on VMware's docs which are fairly good so I can better
prepare for the exam at the same time. I think you're definitely right
though...hands-on is the best way to get a handle on it.
