Marquette and Joliet were some of the early European explorers along the
Illinois River. That is why there are towns like Joliet, Ottawa, and
LaSalle on the Illinois River. The Catholic HS in Ottawa is Marquette
High School. Definitely a French-Canadian influence in that part of
Illinois - at least when it came to naming places.
